However, making your way to that post-work yoga session during rush hour, and having to remember everything can be a real challenge. It’s fair to say that life does throw those proverbial obstacles and curveballs when we least expect it.

Given the current COVID-19 restrictions and measures, there is no easy way around this either. While some gyms have reopened and started offering regular private yoga classes, not all of them have. So how can you reap all the benefits of yoga, if there are no local yoga classes currently running?

The answer is simple, you can take part in some home yoga sessions. You can enjoy all of the same physical and mental health advantages of yoga if you can bring the studio to a space in your home. It’s certainly a great place to start if you are new to yoga in general.

Taking part in studio yoga classes can be a bit daunting for beginners, even in a pre-coronavirus society. The idea of setting foot into, perhaps, yin yoga or vinyasa yoga classes with other people (who may be more experienced and familiar with certain yoga styles), might put beginners off. Ultimately, yoga classes for beginners to enjoy can be somewhat hard to come by.

So for those new to yoga, it’s likely that many of you would prefer to take part in at-home yoga workouts to start with. Home classes can be excellent gateways into enjoying the wider types of yoga classes out there.

  • Create a comfortable space.

The majority of us have to be accommodating when it comes to practising yoga at home. While it may be nice to have a dedicated yoga studio within a spare room, most people have to find smaller pockets of space to practice in the living room or a bedroom. You can do yoga anywhere in your home as long as you have enough space. You may find, if you don’t feel your inside space is secure or safe enough, doing yoga outside in your garden may be preferable.

  • Stay safe.

It’s absolutely vital you be mindful of your body’s vulnerable areas, so you don’t risk injury. Yoga isn’t competitive, do what you feel comfortable with but don’t overexert yourself. Listen to your body; don’t force or push yourself into painful yoga poses or stretches. 

  • Choose your ideal yoga routine or style.

The number of online yoga classes and live sessions are almost endless, but you might not find the perfect yoga style for you straight away. Whether this is power yoga, vinyasa flow or yin yoga, or even a different style altogether, you may need to experiment first to see what works best for you. The more you practice, the more you recognise what your body and mind prefer.

  • Do more than just one session.

Whether it’s once or twice a week (or more), it’s important that you get yourself into that routine of practising regular yoga home sessions. Before you know it, you’ll be making time for yoga every day.

  • Get the right accessories.

Ensure you have a reliable non-slip yoga mat. Mats don’t need to cost the earth, but non-slip mats will be great assets to you. 

  • Relax.

It’s essential you allow enough time to let your body relax at the end of each home yoga session. The last part is arguably the most important, to ensure your body and mind are settled.

  • Find a teacher or instructor that works for you.

When deciding which yoga style, you may find that you prefer the guidance of a certain yoga instructor. This may come down to experimenting and trying various yoga videos online, but once you find that perfect combination, there’s no stopping you!

  • Enjoy it!

The main takeaway here is that you need to enjoy yourself. Yoga, whether for beginners or experts, should always be a great experience. Be patient with yourself and you will find yourself enjoying yoga before long.
